ok, it's like this. i've lived thru enough new technology innovations to know to axe some questions to those 'in the know' before leaping in and either spending a lot of $$ or spending a lot of time. SO.....

shortly i will be purchasing an mp3 player and loading my cd collection in as well as some vinyl and cassettes. so the questions are;

1) currently i am using realPlayer and ripping mp3s w/ a quality of 192 kbps the mp3 player will most likely have a capacity of at least 20 gig so space is not 2 much of an issue. Will i hear much of a difference using anything above 192? any advantage to using something other than realPlayer?

2) looking at the iriver 20gig player because of bang 4 the buck and ipod battery horror stories any input?

3) Don and Bri- i know you guys have ripped much mp3s. any 'wish i knew that before i did this' insights before i start ripping my whole cd collection?
anyone else please feel free to pipe up

I'm no expert on mp3 players but I'll tell you what I can.

I've got a Panasonic portable cd player that also plays mp3s (you may have seen it at the picnic). And a Toshiba PDA with a 512mb smart card that I load with songs. I strap it to my belt and use headphones to listen to mp3s while working in the yard.

I use CoolEdit to batch convert cds to mp3s, but almost any cd writer program has that capability. For the PDA, I usually rip at 128Kbps and it sounds fine through my cheezy headphones. It's just background music when I'm working in the yard anyhow. When ripping stuff done in my home studio, I use 320Kbps and definitely notice a difference listening through studio monitors. I also notice quite a difference between the original WAV file and a 320Kbps mp3.

So I guess the obvious conclusion in choosing a compression ratio is that it depends on where, why and how you're going to listen to the end product. And of course, there's no reason for the sound quality to exceed the capabilities of the headphones (I assume that's what you'll be using?). So, jut ripping some songs at different bit rates and see if you notice the difference.

tanx for the input. i will try ripping the same tune @ different rates and see just how discerning my ears are. as far as how i'll be using the mp3s, most of the time i expect i'll be using headphones, but i do intend to run the player thru my home stereo and car stereo as well, so i will probably opt for the higher rates if i can hear a big difference. (i HAVE been playing loud music for a long time now, but still have SOME hearing left)

Hey, I can't start a new thread, so I thought I'd put this here, as the two people I want to tell about it are here. Line 6 Variax 300 guitars and 700 basses are being blown out. You can get a 300 for $299 and a 700 bass for $499. The guitars themselves aren't great, but the fact that you can dial up just about any cool vintage or modern guitar or bass sound is just too cool. I got one of each, figuring I'd use em for recording. Anyway, the bass ususally goes for well over a grand, and the guitar was going for $600. Bob

The Variax bass has been selling for that price for a few months at MusiciansFriend.com and Guitar Center. I looked all over town to find one to try and the only place that had one was the HOG, who was selling it for $799. The place was a madhouse though so I didn't bother to stick around to try it.

I read mixed reviews of it. Some said it's merely a mini-POD built into a bass and only a couple of sounds were worthwhile. Others said that it sounds great, especially for recording.

Anyhow, I ended up getting a Marcus Miller model Jazz Bass at the GC in Henrietta. There was also a used Mex fretless Jazz Bass with Bartolini pickups that sounded and played very nice and was selling for $250 and I bought that too. The pickguard had some ugly cosmetic blemishes (looked like someone tried to clean it with acetone and semi-melted it), but I got it looking like new polishing it out with a buffing wheel and rouge.

I think the problem with creating threads is fixed now, btw.

Well, if you wanna try the bass, you are welcome to. It's MUCH more than just a glorified Pod.
