Soon after I bought my house about 6 years ago, I had a security system
installed by TYCO / ADT Security which included a wireless keypad unit,
1 motion detector, 2 door detectors, and a 3 year contract for the
monitoring service. Installation was $99 and the monitoring service
cost about $30/month. Toward the end of the contract, I was talking to
my neighbor about his system and he told me he was paying $25/month for
monitoring with a different company. The calls from ADT started trying
to get me to renew the contract and I told them that I was going with a
different company. They called many, many times and the asshole
salesman even hung up on me once. This went on for about 3 months after
my contract expired.

Then I got a bill from ADT for about $150. I figured it was a mistake
because I was all paid up on the old contract and hadn't renewed it.
After a couple of more months of getting this bill, I called them and
the woman told me to read the contract. In the fine print was a clause
that said the service contract would be automatically renewed if ADT
was not notified in writing within 30 days of expiration. WTF! The
salespeople I had numerous conversations with never mentioed that. So,
now they expect me to pay for a service I'm not using.

I did a some googling for complaints and problems with ADT and found
that I'm certainly not the only one ripped off by them. Here are a few:

Okay, I should have read the contract. But, after receiving repeated
calls to renew, who would think that the contract would renew
automatically? It's misleading and I'll never trust that company again.
